    Dr. David Tharpe graduated from Furman University with a BS in Biology. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UAB. After completing his fellowship in Nephrology in 1977, he and Dr. Jerry Jackson formed Nephrology Associates, PC in Birmingham. He serves as Chief of Nephrology at several local hospitals and on the carrier advisory committee for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Other professional affiliations include the American Society of Nephrology and the Renal Physicians Association.

    Dr. Ozbirn received his undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from Auburn University. He received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing a Public Health Service in rural Alabama, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine with Baptist Health Systems in Birmingham. Following a nephrology fellowship at University Hospital in Birmingham, he joined Nephrology Associates, P.C. in 1995. Dr. Ozbirn is a fellow of American College of Physicians, a member of American Society of Nephrology, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.

    Dr. Roman Brantley graduated from Birmingham Southern with a degree in chemistry in 1986. He received his medical degree in 1991 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Brantley completed his Internal Medicine Residency program in1994 and completed his Nephrology Fellowship in 1996 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Interventional Nephrology. Following completion of academics he joined Nephrology Associates, P.C. in 1997. Dr. Brantley is involved in various societies and associations including American College of Physicians, American Medical Association and American Society of Nephrology.

    Dr.Lewis received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University in 1982. He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1985. Upon completion of a residency in internal medicine at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis in1988, Dr. Lewis relocated to Birmingham where he completed fellowship training in nephrology at UAB. He served as an instructor in medicine and assistant professor at UAB after completing his fellowship and was involved in basic science and clinical research projects pertaining to hypertension and kidney disease as well as coordinate the nephrology fellowship training program. Dr. Lewis joined Nephrology Associates in 1998. He remains active in the American Society of Nephrology and The American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology.

    Dr. Brouillette attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. He completed his degree in microbiology and cell science in 1989 and received his medical degree in 1993. His postgraduate training consisted of internship and residency in Internal Medicine at UAB through 1996, with a year of further training as chief medicine resident for BHS Residency Program through June 1997.

    Dr. Brouillette also attended Vanderbilt University where he completed fellowship training in Nephrology. Upon his return to Birmingham, AL he joined Nephrology Associates, P.C. starting his career as a full time practicing nephrologist. Since joining the practice he has become certified in 2003 by the American Society of Diagnostic Interventional Nephrology in performing hemodialysis vascular access procedures. He is a perennial lecturer on kidney disease at medical centers across Birmingham and surrounding communities. He remains active in various clinic research projects using informatics and has published multiple papers in the clinical nephrology literature. Dr. Brouillette is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, a member of the American College of Physicians, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.

    Thomas Watson, M.D. is Board-Certified in Nephrology and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Born in Lexington, KY, he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Watson received his medical education in Atlanta at Emory University where he was president of his graduating class. He continued his training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital of Cornell University in New York, NY, where he was also honored to serve as assistant chief medical resident.

    His interests include chronic kidney disease treatment and prevention, hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities, acute renal failure, and interventional nephrology—for which he is certified by the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology. He performs procedures at the Nephrology Vascular Lab. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the Renal Physicians Association, and the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology.

He served as chief nephrology fellow during his final year of fellowship at UAB.

    Dr. Phillip N. Madonia was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science and a minor in Theology. Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Madonia completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, where he served as chief resident. Subsequently, he served two years on the academic faculty in Medicine and Pediatrics at LSU, followed by a year as assistant professor of internal medicine in the division of nutrition at William Beaumont School of Medicine in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, Renal Physicians Association, and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Madonia is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Nephrology.
